PROJECT BRIEF

This striking 21,832m2 six storey building for Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA) replaced the old force headquarters at Trafford Park. Completed in 2011, the building accommodates up to 1,500 staff.

Designed to deliver a smarter, more effective workplace environment the building features a central atrium which is surrounded by open plan offices designed to encourage interaction between departments and strengthen communication. The environmentally neutral design from architects Aedas has radically reduced running costs. The building has a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.

PROJECT SOLUTION

As part of this sustainable approach, WMS were asked to supply and install underfloor heating systems for the central atrium and the reception area. An AmbiTak system installed within a 97mm screed. The systems can operate in both heating and cooling modes.

GMPA Chairman Cllr Paul Murphy said: “This new HQ building will be the most modern, fit-for-purpose police building in the UK. A project of this scale and size takes an incredible amount of hard work and commitment from everyone involved”
